William Tryon '54 earned four letters in football and was an all-conference selection all four years. In 1953 he was captain of the team and was named the Beavers' most valuable player. As a baseball player, Tryon earned four letters and was named team captain in 1954. He placed on four straight conference championship teams and was named Who's Who in College in 1954.

During his 15 years as a coach, Tryon amassed a record of 61-48-1. The BV Letterman's Club elected Tryon Coach of the Year in 1958. He was- also named Coach of the Year by the Northwest Athletic Banquet in 1966. For three years He was a member of-th, board of directors of the Iowa High School Football Coaches Association.
