Harold Sweet '35 earned four letters in football and basketball and was one of the leading conference scorers. He was selected captain of both football and basketball teams his senior year. He also earned two letters in track and one letter in baseball.
Alter graduating from Buena Vista, Sweet coached at Anamosa and Carroll, earning four conference championships in five years. In 1947, he was chosen runner-up for the state Coach of the Year Award. In 1948 he moved on to Dubuque, where his team placed second in the Mississippi Valley Conference in the 1951-52 season. In 1954 his team allowed no opponents to score until the state tournament, losing only to Iowa City.
Sweet received the All-State Coaches Award in 1970. Following his coaching career he served as director of athletics for the Dubuque Community School District.
