A broken ankle took away Art Sutton’s last year of eligibility,
but it could not take away his desire to earn a collegiate
degree. For three years in the late 1930s, he was an
accomplished three-sport athlete and nine-time letter winner.
Sutton was a key member of the school's football, basketball,
and baseball teams. As a captain of the baseball squad
during his junior year, he suffered a career-ending injury
sliding into a base. With his athletic career cut short, Sutton
left Buena Vista for a couple of years before returning to
campus to earn his degree in 1942. He went on to serve as a
high school coach for 15 years before entering the sporting
goods industry. Art is retired and continues to live in Storm
Lake, Iowa with his wife Marvel. They have four grown
children: Tom, Cindy, Artie, and Lois.
