As a Buena Vista student-athlete, Jay Beekmann '42 lettered in basketball, baseball and football. He was named to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities and named an all-conference basketball center in 1941 and 1942.
Beekmann returned to Buena Vista in 1955 as director of athletics and baseball coach. His baseball teams won the Iowa Conference baseball championship in 1957, 1959 and 1965. Under his guidance, the Beavers competed in the National NAIA tournaments in 1957 and 1968. He was awarded NAIA baseball coach of the year for area honors in 1965, 1966 and 1968.
