Floyd Athay was a member of the Beaver baseball team and helped guide them to the Iowa Conference Championship in both 1980-81. He also played on two NCAA regional qualifying teams. The four-time letterwinner was also a two-time First team all-conference performer. Since leaving BVU, he taught upper elementary classes in Fonda from 1981-88, while also serving as the head baseball coach each year. in addition to baseball, he coached girls track and girls basketball from 1986-88.

In 1988 Athay moved on to Le Mars community High School where he’s still employed today. He taught fifth grade until 2005 before taking over as the school’s activities director. While at Le Mars, he served as head baseball coach from 1989-2003. Throughout his entire coaching career, he posted an overall mark of 374-277 and won four conference, three sectional, and five district championships. He has been named District AD of the Year each year from 2006-08 by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association.
