Smith was a four-year stand-out baseball player for fellow Buena Vista Athletic Hall of Famer Jay Beekman.  He earned four varsity letters and was one of only two players in the league to be named a First Team All-Conference selection his final three years.  he was also named an All-District and an All-American those same three seasons.  As a junior, he was selected to the All Star District Team where he finished with the second highest batting average.  The Beavers shared the conference title during his sophomore year and won the outright title and advanced to the NAIA College World Series the year after.  Smith is still tied for second on the program's all-time career list in triples (12) and is tied for third in stolen bases (50).  He was taken in the professional baseball draft by different teams in each of his four years.  After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, he went on to serve 35 years as a teacher/principal in the Council Bluffs School District before retiring in 2004.  He and his wife, Sandra, currently live in Underwood and have two children, Scott and Ryan.
