Minnesota-Morris Edges Women's Soccer in 2-1 Thriller

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Sept. 6, 2025) - The Buena Vista women's soccer team hosted the University of Minnesota-Morris on Saturday afternoon and nearly overcame a two-goal deficit but came up just short in a 2-1 loss.

The Cougars broke a scoreless contest with a goal during the 30th minute from Brianna Ganske on a rebound off a keeper save as UM-Morris led 1-0 at the break. Gankse did nearly the same thing 15 minutes into the second half to make it a 2-0 contest. Freshman Peyton Henricksen sent a shot from the top left corner of the box over the head of the keeper, and it found the back of the net despite a Cougar player trying to head it out from and keep it from crossing the line.

BVU was on the offensive attack throughout most of the game's final minutes and had multiple shot attempts hit just off either the crossbar or post but stay out of the net. UM-M held a 7-1 advantage in shots in the first half but it was more even in the second with the Cougars holding a slight 7-4 edge.

Senior Bailey Gibbons had two of the team's five shots in the game with Henricksen's goal coming as the team's only shot-on-goal. Starting keeper Maia Jaroch came in fresh off a 17-save performance last time out and picked up where she left off with four first-half saves before an injury forced her out of the game with just over five minutes left in the opening half.

Freshman Macy Palmer came on and played the remainder of the game and allowed one goal while also making four saves.

Ganske finished with four shots (all on-goal) to lead the Cougars (1-2-1) who picked up their first win of the year.

Buena Vista is now 2-1-1 on the year and is set to host Mount Marty College on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 5 p.m. inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.
