SEASON PREVIEW: Women's Soccer Excited to Build off Last Season's Success

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Aug. 25, 2025) - The Buena Vista women's soccer team is coming off one of its best seasons over the last decade, and it is excited to get back on the field this fall to continue building off that success in 2025.

BVU found the back of the net 35 times a year ago which was more than the previous three seasons combined. Despite having to replace two of its top-3 goal scorers from that roster, the Beavers do have five scorers who are set to return for third-year coach Mauricio Lozada who look to bring a great deal of team chemistry.

Leading that group will be junior Hailey Chambers, who scored six goals, including three game-winners, and also dished out a pair of assists. Seniors Bailey Gibbons and Alyssa Cathcart are two of the three players coming back that also scored multiple goals last year. Gibbons finished the year ranked fourth on the team in total points after leading BVU with five assists to accompany her two goals scored.

Overall, the Beavers will have a bulk of its roster and experience returning in 2025. A total of 10 players who appeared in at least 10 matches a year ago will put the uniform on again this fall. This year's squad will be led by its trio of seniors - Gibbons, Cathcart and Avery Bryant.

Bryant was among the leaders in the middle of the formation for the Beavers last season and will likely be looked upon to do more of the same throughout her final collegiate campaign. BVU had seven matches in 2024 where it allowed one goal or loss, including four shutouts, and also had three matches where it scored at least five times.

Sophomore Maia Jaroch will be the top returning player in-goal as she looks to battle for the starting spot left behind by Trisha Westphal, who is now the team's top assistant coach. In her first collegiate season, Jaroch saw time in four matches, allowed only two goals and posted nine saves, while going 2-0 with one shutout.

We are excited to continue to build on the great season we had last fall and cannot wait to get the season started.
Mauricio Lozada, BVU Head Women's Soccer Coach

Lozada will have plenty of depth to turn to heading into the year with the bulk of returners along with the addition of 13 new players.

The team opens the year on the road at Martin Luther College on Friday, Aug. 29 at 2 p.m., before kicking off a four-game homestand two days later on Sunday, Aug. 31, by hosting Hesston College at 10:30 a.m. The American Rivers Conference schedule begins on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Wartburg College. The team's first home A-R-C contest will be against Coe College on Wednesday, Oct. 8. The final regular season contest will take place inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium versus the University of Dubuque on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 5 p.m.
