STORM LAKE, Iowa (May 9, 2021) - The Buena Vista University baseball team overcame a 5-1 deficit heading into its final at-bat of game one before the team blasted three home runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, including a walk-off solo shot from
Calvin Harris, that gave the Beavers a thrilling 6-5 victory over Central College in game one of Sunday's doubleheader.
Parker Truesdell started the rally with a leadoff single before
Logan Mueller was hit by a pitch. Senior pinch hitter
Nick Henrichs then came to the plate and blasted an 0-1 pitch well over the fence in left to get BVU within 5-4. Sophomore
Grant Oseka then made it back-to-back long balls for the Beavers as he lifted a 3-1 pitch just over the fence in left center to tie things up at 6-6. After
Jordan Mathewson struck out looking for the first out of the inning, Harris came through in the clutch by launching the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for his first career home run.
Harris finished the game 2-for-4 with the RBI while
Tyler Tennyson added a pair of hits, including his team-leading 13th double of the season.
Dalton Glenn came on in relief and pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn the win and improve to 4-5 on the year.Â
Mason Gehling got the start and allowed a pair of earned runs and five hits over 5.2 innings. He also struck out five but walked four.
The Dutch jumped on BVU early in game two and forced the Beavers to go to the bullpen before recording a single out.Â
Brayden Polzien came on in relief of starter
Nick Henrichs with the bases loaded and already facing a 2-0 deficit. He got a ground ball double-play that scored a run and after a wild pitch pushed across a fourth run, Polzien got a strikeout to end the frame.
BVU did get two of those runs back in the bottom half to make it 4-2 and got within a run in the second after a double by
Caden Mathewson into the right center gap. Each team pushed across a single run in the fourth to make it 5-4 but then the Dutch tacked on three more in the fifth and three additional insurance runs in the seventh.
Parker Truesdell finished 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and two runs scored for the Beavers, while Tennyson added two more hits and a pair of RBI while Harris also tallied two base knocks and two stolen bases.
Henrichs (0-3) suffered the loss for BVU with Polzien going a solid 4.1 innings, surrendering two runs and two hits while walking three and striking out five.Â
Austin Scott,
Eric LaRue and
Garrett Anderson all saw action out of the pen before
Spencer Holmes came on to finish things off by working the final 2.1 innings and striking out three.
Buena Vista improves to 17-19 overall (13-15 A-R-C) and will get set to close out the regular season with a four-game road series at Nebraska Wesleyan this upcoming Thursday and Friday down in Lincoln, Neb. Game one of that series is set to get underway at 1:00 p.m.
