DUBUQUE, Iowa (May 2, 2021) - The Buena Vista University baseball team picked up a big series win on Sunday afternoon taking the opener of the doubleheader against the University of Dubuque, 2-1, before falling in the nine-inning contest, 12-3. BVU swept the Spartans on Friday to begin the 4-game set.
In Sunday's seven-inning opener, senior
Tyler Stoltze lined a single into center that scored a pair of runs and gave the Beavers a 2-0 lead in the second. That proved to be all that starter
Mason Gehling (2-3) needed, as he threw a season-high seven innings en route to his first complete game of the year. He scattered just four hits and was able to overcome four walks. His only run allowed came in the third inning on an RBI groundout.
Stoltze finished 2-for-2 in the contest while sophomore
Caden Mathewson was 2-for-3. BVU had six total hits in the game (all singles).
In the finale, the Spartans scored in six of the eight innings to help them salvage one game in the series. They jumpd out to the early lead with two runs in the first and later scored three times in both the fiourth and fifth innings to break things open. Both Jaden and
Caden Mathewson drove in runs as did
Parker Truesdell.
Jordan Mathewson finished 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and a run scored while Truesdell added two hits and the one RBI.
Grant Oseka came on and recorded a pinch hit doubled as BVU finished with seven hits overall. Dubuque had 10 hits in the game but only two went for extra bases.
Nick Henrichs suffered the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on five hit over 4.0 innings.
Jared Salas came on in relief and was charged with three runs without recording an out before Garret Anderson,
Aiden Brock,
Eric LaRue and
Austin Scott combined to allow just three runs and three hits over the final four innings.
Buena Vista, which has won five of its last seven games overall, improves to 14-18 overall (10-14 A-R-C). The team returns home for its final homestand of the year this upcoming weekend as it entertains Central College for a 4-game series. The first two games of that match-up begin on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. before wrapping up with the final two games on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Senior Day will take place between games on Sunday.
