STORM LAKE, Iowa (May 7, 2021) - The Buena Vista baseball team got its final home stand of the year off to a thrilling start by taking a pair of games from visiting Central College on Friday afternoon by scores of 1-0 and 6-2.
Senior
Tyler Stoltze lifted a 1-2 pitch into shallow center field with two outs in the seventh inning that fell just out of the reach of the diving centerfielder and scored
Calvin Harris from third for the walk-off victory. Â
Each team was held to just five hits in what was a true pitcher's duel to begin the series.Â
Caden Mathewson had two of BVU's five base knocks as all 10 hits in the contest went for singles.
Senior
Tyler Tennyson made the most of his final career home appearance on the mound, scattering just five hits and striking out six while improving to 6-2 on the year and picking up his fourth complete game of the year.
The Dutch scored their first run of the day in the second inning off starter
Michael Demers but the lead was short-lived as the Beavers raced right back with two in the bottom half.Â
Logan Mueller got BVU on the board when he laced an RBI double into the right center field gap before
Easton Bahr added an RBi ground out for a 2-1 lead.Â
Calvin Harris reached on a dropped fly ball by the centerfielder after
Jordan Mathewson scampered all the way to third on a wild pickoff throw from the pitcher.
Central got one run back in the fifth on a single down the left field line that would ultimately chase Demers from the game. Tennyson knocked home a run in the bottom half to push the cushion back to 4-2 before
Parker Truesdell laced a double off the fence in left center to make it a four-run advantage.
Aiden Brock came out of the bullpen in relief and pitched 3.2 innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out four.Â
Dalton Glenn came on in the ninth and picked up one strikeout to preserve the win.
Tennyson finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored to help lead the way at the plate for BVU. Mueller followed with two hits while
Caden Mathewson was 1-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.
Buena Vista has now won six of its last eight games overall to improve to 16-18 (12-14 A-R-C) and will look to win its third straight series when the two teams meet back up on Sunday, May 9, for the final two games. First pitch of game one of that doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
