Beavers Win Series over Storm with DH Split on Sunday

STORM LAKE, Iowa (March 21, 2021) - The Buena Vista baseball team wrapped up its four-game weekend series against visiting Simpson College on Sunday afternoon by claiming a 13-7 victory in the opener before Simpson salvaged a win in the finale by cruising to the 9-2 triumph.

After chalking up 21 hits during Saturday's game two thriller, the Beaver offense carried that momentum into Sunday's opener by adding 20 more hits to its season total and securing the season win.  BVU scored three times in the first inning and twice more in the third to build an early 5-0 lead.  Simpson scored single runs in the fourth and fifth but BVU responded each time by scoring three runs of its own in the fourth and two more in the fifth for an 10-2 cushion.  Each team scored three times in the sixth inning before the Storm added two more in the seventh.

Senior Tyler Tennyson continued his monster weekend at the plate by going 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.  Fellow senior Parker Truesdell also added four hits, including a pair of doubles, while driving in three and scoring twice.  Sophomore Jordan Mathewson added three hits from the leadoff spot and scored two runs, Calving Harris had two hits and three RBI and Logan Mueller also chipped in with two hits and a pair of runs scored.

Dalton Glenn picked up the win on the mound after pitching 4.2 innings and allowing just two runs and five hits.  He did strikeout five and walked four.

The Storm (4-6, 1-3 A-R-C) got a stellar pitching performance from starter Colton Major in the finale as he pitched into the ninth inning and was charged with just two runs and four hits while striking out seven.  He had plenty of help from his offense as Simpson out-hit the Beavers 15-5 overall, including three home runs and seven extra-base hits in all.  The loss snapped BVU's 15-game home win streak which dated all the way back to the early part of the 2019 campaign.

Tennyson turned in two of the five hits for the Beavers, including a run-scoring double in the ninth.  Jackson Smith came on as a pinch hitter in the final frame and also recorded an RBI base hit.

Nick Henrichs suffered the loss for BVU after lasting only 2.2 innings and allowing six runs and eight hits.

Buena Vista is now 5-4 overall (3-1 A-R-C).  The team is set to return to the diamond for a four-game road series at Loras College next Friday (March 26) and Saturday (March 27).  First pitch for Friday's doubleheader is set for 3:30 p.m.
