Baseball Sweeps Past Duhawks to begin Four-Game Series

DUBUQUE, Iowa (March 26, 2021) - The Buena Vista baseball team chalked up 31 base hits and 21 total runs on Friday afternoon en route to a doubleheader sweep over Loras College by scores of 6-1 and 15-12.

Senior Tyler Tennyson held the league's leading offense in check throughout the series opener by surrendering just one run on seven hits.  He also helped himself out at the plate by driving in two runs while going 1-for-3.  He put the team in front in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly and added an RBI single in the fourth to push the lead to 5-0.

Loras scored its only run in the fourth with a two-run double to right center.

Calvin Harris went 4-for-4 to help lead the Beavers at the plate as Parker Truesdell added three hits.  Logan Mueller and Tyler Stoltze each doubled as BVU pounded out 15 hits.

The offensive barrage continued into the second game with seven different players recording at least two hits in the contest.  The Beavers scored seven times in the second inning capped by Caden Matheweson's two-run home run that scored his brother Jaden who had doubled home a run earlier in the inning.  Loras (7-3, 4-2 A-R-C) came back with two runs of its own in the third before the Beavers added four more in the fourth to make it an 11-2 advantage.

The Beavers took a 15-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning before the Duhawks put a rally together with seven runs of their own in the bottom half to get within three.  The home team then loaded the bases with just one out in the ninth but Harris, who had come on in relief earlier in the inning, buckled down and got back-to-back strikeouts as the Beavers picked up their seventh win in eight games.

The Mathewson duo tallied two hits, two RBI and two runs scored apiece while Harris doubled twice and drove in three to finish 6-for-9 on the day.  Truesdell, along with Ryley McGregor chimed in with three hits with Truesdell also scoring three times.  Overall, BVU chalked up 16 hits and left only six men on base.

Sophomore Mason Gehling got the start and went 5.2 innings to pick up the win.  He allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out six to improve to 1-1 on the year.  Harris recorded his second save.

Buena Vista improves to 7-4 on the year (5-1 A-R-C) and will go for the series win on Sunday (March 28) when the two teams head back out onto the field.  First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. back in Dubuque.
