Baseball Splits Sunday DH to Claim Series Win over Duhawks

STORM LAKE, Iowa (March 28, 2021) - The Buena Vista University baseball team picked up its second straight series win to begin American Rivers Conference play after splitting a doubleheader at Loras College on Sunday to win the series over the Duhawks by taking three of four games.

It was all Loras in the opener as the it scored six runs in the first at-bat to build an early 6-0 lead.  The lead grew to 10-0 after the Duhawks scored another run in the second and three more in the third.  BVU was only able to scratch across a single run in the fifth on a Jordan Mathewson RBI double. Mathewson went 2-for-3 overall and was the only player with multiple hits in the contest and the only Beaver with an extra-base knock.

Dalton Glenn (2-2) suffered the loss after allowing all 10 runs on 10 hits in 3.0 innings pitched.

Loras struck first again in the finale by pushing across a single run in the first inning.  Parker Truesdell evened things up in the second with a sacrifice fly in the second before senior Ryley McGregor gave the team the lead for good with a solo home run to right.

The Beavers doubled their run total in the seventh when Logan Mueller doubled home Caden Mathewson and McGregor singled home Mueller later in the inning.  The Duhawks added a single run in the seventh for the game's final score.

Mueller and McGregor each finished with two hits as both teams tallied seven in the game.

Aiden Brock (1-0) registered his first win by pitching 5.0 innings and surrendering just one unearned run on five hits while striking out three.  The Beaver bullpen came up big, allowing just one run and two hits the rest of the way.  Calvin Harris came on to close things out to record his third save of the year.

Buena Vista improves to 8-5 overall (6-2 A-R-C) and wil now prepare to host Coe College (11-2, 7-1 A-R-C) in a four-game weekend series on April 1 and 3.  The match-up of the top two teams in this year's preseason coaches poll is set to get underway with Thursday's doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
