Men's Basketball Wins 65-62 Thriller on Senior Day over the Duhawks

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Feb. 21, 2026) - The Buena Vista men's basketball team concluded its regular season on Saturday by holding off Loras College 65-62 on Senior Day in what was the final home game for the team this season.

It was a defensive battle for both sides throughout the contest. Both teams were held under 35 percent shooting in the opening half and went into the locker room deadlocked at 26-26. The two sides heated a touch over the final 20 minutes, but neither side was able to build any sort of lead. BVU led by as many as seven in the first half and six in the second.

The Duhawks led 39-38 after a pair of made free-throws six minutes into the second half before BVU came right back and got the lead back at 40-39 following a layup from senior Jackson Jones. Moments later junior Carter Sievers buried a long range bucket that gave the Beavers their largest lead of the half at 47-41. Loras got as close as one point on several occasions over the final 10 minutes of the half, but BVU never relinquished the lead.

Buena Vista, which ranks third in DIII in free-throw percentage this season, made its final seven attempts over the final 2:30, which helped secure the win. Loras made a three-point shot in the closing seconds that brough the Duhawks with 63-61 with under three seconds to go, but Jayden Brink sealed the win and snapped a 16-game losing streak in the series, by sinking the final two free-throws.

Sievers turned in 17 points and in the process became the 34th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. He entered the game just 14 points shy of the mark. Despite going just 4-of-14 from the field, he did a bulk of his scoring at the free-throw line by converting 8-of-9. Jones, playing his final game inside of Siebens Fieldhouse, made a trio of three-point shots and matched Sievers with 17 points. He also grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists. Sophomore Jayden Brink chipped in with 14 points, including a pair of makes from beyond the arc.

Buena Vista made 21-of-25 from the charity stripe in the game and 6-of-22 from downtown. It turned the ball over just nine times and got 29 bench points.

Loras, one of the league's top 3-point shooting teams, was held to only 16.7 percent from behind the arc (4-of-24). The Duhawks connected on only 35.7 percent from the field overall but did stay in the game by making 18-of-22 from the free-throw stripe. Gavin Sarvis led the way with 20 points as Loras (18-8, 12-4 A-R-C) will be the No. 2  seed in next week's conference tournament.

Buena Vista improves to 14-11 overall (7-9 A-R-C) and earns the No. 5 seed in the tournament. The team will go on the road to play at No. 4 Dubuque on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m.
