Volleyball Edged in Five-Set Thriller to Close out Regular Season

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Nov. 3, 2026) - The Buena Vista volleyball team closed out the regular on Tuesday night inside of Siebens Fieldhouse, but the Beavers were dealt a tough 3-2 loss by visiting Coe College, 25-22, 16-25, 10-25, 25-20, 15-13).

BVU seemed to be in control of the match after going up 2-1 following its dominant 25-10 victory in the third set. The Beavers trailed 4-0 out of the gate in the fourth set before rallying back to tie it up at 5-5. That momentum kept going, and after consecutive attack errors by the Kohawks, the Buena Vista lead grew to 12-8.  Coe, however, came back with four straight to pull even and went on to score seven of the eight points after that to lead 19-15. BVU couldn't quite close the gap as the Kohawks held on for the 25-20  win.

In the decisive fifth set, it was BVU coming out with the first three points and the Beavers continued to lead 5-2 before the Kohawks (10-16, 3-4 A-R-C) took advantage of four attack errors by the Beavers during an 8-0 run that gave them a 10-5 cushion. It was far from being over as BVU came storming back and tied things up at 13-13 down the stretch, but Coe was able to force the Beavers into back-to-back attack errors to close out the match.

Hernandez led all players with a match-high 20 kills for Buena Vista and added 14 digs en route to her 16th double-double of the year. Freshman Nora Konz had herself a big night with 14 kills and a career-high 25 digs to mark her eighth double-double.  Senior Sydney Meints chipped in with seven kills and four solo blocks.

Junior setters Anabel Seaman and Merced Ramirez dished out 21 and 20 assists, respectively, with Ramirez adding 12 digs for her sixth double-double. Senior Hope Vanderlinden finished the night with five kills and a team-leading four ace serves.

As a team, the Beavers had 55 total kills but finished with an attack percentage of .142 after posting a mark of over .300 in the second set.

Buena Vista wraps up the regular season at 22-3 overall (5-2 A-R-C). The team had already locked up a No. 2 seed and a first round bye into next week's A-R-C Tournament. The team will host the winner of the No. 6 and No. 3 seed on Thursday night, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m.
