Men's Golf Turns in a Monumental Weekend at Wartburg Fall Invite

WAVERLY, Iowa (Sept. 28, 2025) - The Buena Vista men's golf team continued its solid play throughout the fall over the weekend as it placed second as a team at the Wartburg College Fall Invite after a final round school record of 285.

Senior Matthew Turpen, who carded an even-par 72 on Saturday, was the leader of the pack for the Beavers all weekend and capped it off by firing a 5-under 67 over the final 18 holes which is the program's lowest individual 18-hole score in at least the last 32 years. His 36-hole mark of 139 is also the lowest over the last three decades, and he came in second overall and only three shots back of medalist Blake Perrin of Simpson College who turned in a pair of 68's.

Josh Reed held the previous low round score of 68 set back in 2008-09.

Senior Mason Laven had the team's second-lowest round of the final day with an even-par 72 and finished the weekend strong after an opening round of 80 to begin the weekend. He was one stroke behind Kaleb Sander and Gabe Kramer, who both carded 73's on Sunday with Sander tying for 13th and Kramer in 16th with a 149 and 151, respectively.

Wartburg College won the team race by nine strokes over the Beavers and Storm.

BVU will send a select group of JV golfers to take part in the Waldorf College Invite on Monday, Sept. 29 at Lake Mills, Iowa, before the full team wraps up the fall schedule on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the Simpson College Invite in Indianola.
