Men's Tennis Picks up 6-1 Road Win at Simpson

Box Score INDIANOLA, Iowa (Apr. 8, 2025) - The Buena Vista men's tennis team returned to American Rivers Conference play on Tuesday afternoon at Simpson College, and the Beavers came away with a strong 6-1 American Rivers Conference victory over the Storm.

Despite suffering a tough 6-1 loss at No. 1 doubles, the Beavers bounced back in a big way with a thrilling 7-5 win at No. 2 from Brock Bruns and Dalton Prego. BVU earned the doubles point after the No. 3 tandem of Tyler Hager and Ryan Webb secured a strong 6-3 triumph.

That momentum carried over into singles play which included the first singles victory from Kaiden DePascale at No. 1. After dropping the opening set, 6-1, DePascale responded with a 7-6 (7-3) and 11-9 three-set tiebreaker victory. The only setback for BVU in singles came at No. 2 where Pregon was edged in a three-set tiebreaker of his own.

Bruns, Webb and Harger rolled to wins at No. 3 thru 5 while the Beavers capped off the match with another thrilling three-set tiebreaker at No. 6

"Tonight was a very important match for us to win," said BVU head coach Brett Groen. "As a goal of the team is always to make the conference tournament, we knew we had to start somewhere in the win colum to work towards that goal. We started out a little slow in doubles from top to bottom, but got some of the big points late in two of the three to pick up the point. I think our doubles win and getting that point allowed us to relax and focus our attention back on singles."

"We battled hard on every point in single from top to bottom and played really well and got some important victories," added Groen. "Brock played great at No. 3 and got done first and I think that really helped the team see that excitement and focus on their own matches. Kaiden got an amazing three-set victory at No. 1, the first conference singles win for him, and he played with a great deal of confidence. We played really well in the pressure situations in single, and that helped us to get that team win."

Buena Vista is now 7-6 overall (1-2 A-R-C) and will host the University of Dubuque on Friday, Apr. 11 at 3:30 p.m. The team will also remain at home on Saturday, Apr. 12, for a match with Loras College at 10 a.m.
