Men's Tennis Edged in Non-Conference Thriller by Crown

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Apr. 27, 2026) - The Buena Vista men's tennis team hosted Crown College on Monday afternoon in a non-conference match against Crown College for the first of two matches this week to close out its season. The Polars would, however, come away with a 4-3 victory.

Due to unfavorable playing conditions, the match was forced indoors to the Lamberti Recreation Center on the BVU campus. It played out as a toe-to-toe match by both teams starting right from the opening serve.

BVU was victorious at No. 2 doubles as the tandem of Nick Hiney and Bryson Fredericksen pulled out a thrilling 6-4 victory. The Beavers nearly earned the point but came up just short in a 9-7 tiebreaker at No. 1.

In singles play, two of the Beavers three victories came in three-set tiebreakers with two of their losses also come in the same fashion. Tyler Harger notched one of those triumphs at No. 2 with a 6-4, 6-7, 10-6 score line. Owen Stansberry was able to pull out his thriller by the score of 6-4, 5-7, 10-5. The lone victory by BVU that didn't go three sets was a commanding 6-0, 6-1 straight set win by Jeb Bathrick. Fredericksen and Smith both dropped heartbreaking three-set tiebreakers with Smith dropping his tiebreaker set, 11-9.

“I can't say enough about the fight in our team tonight,” said BVU head coach Brett Groen. “We had five or six matches that went into tiebreakers, and we just couldn't get over the hump on a couple of the bigger points of those matches. A great job in singles by  both Tyler and Jeb. They did a great job of coming out of the gate big and made their opponents play catch up. We will use the momentum for how we battled tonight into our match on Tuesday against Martin Luther.”

The team moves to 5-13 on the year and will close out its season against the Knights on Tuesday afternoon starting at 4 p.m.
