DES MOINES, Iowa (Apr. 29, 2025) - The Buena Vista men's golf team bounced back in a big way on Tuesday to close out the 2025 A-R-C Men's Golf Championships by posting a 307 and moved up two spots to finish in sixth place overall.
The Beavers began the 54-hole event with a 309 on Sunday which was its lowest score in the championships since 2010. After struggling with the gusty winds on Monday and posting a 333, the team came out and closed the door in a big way, and the final round score was its best since firing a 301 in the third round of the 2009 championships.
It was in position to equal its opening round score but would go on to better that mark with birdies on the final hole from juniors
Matthew Turpen and
Mason Laven. It was Turpen's third birdie on the back nine as he carded a 76 and came up just short of A-R-C honors by tying for 12th place and finishing one stroke out of the top-10. Laven turned in a 79 and finished 20th.
Junior
Kaleb Sander saved his best round for last as he carded a 1-under 35 on the back nine en route to a final round score of 1-over 72 and moved up 15 spots on the leaderboard to tie for 20th. Sophomore
Gabe Kramer birdied two of his first three holes of the day and went out with a 38 on the front nine, but had a tougher back nine with a 42 and rounded out the scoring with an 80.
Payton Greenwood was the team's designated alternate golfer for the tournament and did jump in and replace
Reid Hany for the final round and turned in an 87.
The Beavers leapfrogged both Loras and Wartburg College on the final day and posted its highest overall team finish at the conference championships since it also came in sixth back in 2012-13. It's also the lowest 54-hole score for the team since the championships moved to a three-day event.
