DES MOINES, Iowa (Apr. 27, 2025) - The Buena Vista men's golf team had four of its five golfers shoot opening rounds in the 70's, including junior
Mason Laven's team-low 74, as the Beavers begin the American Rivers Conference Championships with a 309 and has itself tied for fifth as a team after 18 holes.
Playing at Glenn Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines, the Beavers posted its second straight round of 309 at the course dating back to last year's final round. It's the program's lowest scoring since posting three rounds of 308 at the 2010 championships.
Laven led the way for the Beavers as he turned in three birdies during his round, including one on his final hole, and sits is near the top of the leaderboard in a tie for ninth place. He will enter the second round only three shots back of second and five shots behind the leader.
Matthew Turpen and
Kaleb Sander are only three shots back after a each fired a 78.
Reid Hany chalked up a team-high four birdies in his round but was hindered a bit by late three-hole stretch in which he bogeyed holes 15 thru 17 before also ending his day with a birdie on the par-4 18th.
Gabe Kramer rounded out the line-up for the Beavers with an 83.
As a team, the Beavers are tied with Loras in the standings and sit seven shots back of Nebraska Wesleyan. The individual clubhouse leader is the University of Dubuque's Carter Ruegsegger, who fired a 2-under par 69.
The championships continue with round two on Monday, Apr. 28 starting at 9 a.m.
