INDIANOLA, Iowa (Dec. 13, 2025) - The Buena Vista men's basketball team closed the first half on an 11-2 run to take a 42-33 halftime lead, but Simpson College rallied in the second half by shooting over 60 percent and handed the Beavers a tough 86-76 setback inside of Cowles Fieldhouse.
Sophomore
Jayden Brink turned in a game-high 27 points and went 4-of-8 from downtown to help lead the charge for the Beavers. Junior
Carter Sievers, who had missed the previous five games due to injury, was back in the line-up and scored 12 points despite shooting just 3-of-13 overall.
Adam Bryte chipped in with 11 points, with nine of those coming from beyond the arc, before he fouled out.
Sophomore
Jaden Jones scored five points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists for the Beavers, who shot 9.3 percent overall, 31 percent from downtown and 70 percent from the charity stripe.
After shooting over 51 percent in the first half, including 4-of-8 from downtown, the Beavers cooled off to 29.4 percent over the final 20 minutes and just 5-of-21 from long range.
The Storm, meanwhile, made five from downtown in the first half and made 7-of-13 distance in the second to spark the comeback.
Brink put the Beavers up by 11 with a pair of made free-throws to begin the second half but then went the next five minutes without scoring as the Storm went on a 16-0 run to go up five at 49-44. Simpson took its first double-digit lead midway at 58-48 with 12:00 to go. BVU hung around and stayed within seven with six minutes still to play, but the Storm began putting the game out of reach by scoring 10 straight to go in front by 17 with four minutes left.
The Beavers didn't go away and got back within single digits with just under a minute to go, but the mountain was a bit too steep to climb over, as Simpson (3-6, 1-1 A-R-C) made just enough free-throws down the stretch to put it out of reach and snap BVU's four-game win streak in the series. The Storm had five players score in double figures. Levi Gurwell scored a team-high 20 to go along with five rebounds and five assists. He made five of the team's 13 treys.
Buena Vista moves to 5-3 overall (1-2 A-R-C) and next travels to North Central University (MN) for a non-conference game on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 5:30 p.m., before it returns home to host Lakeland University on Friday, Dec. 19 at 6 p.m.
