Hot Shooting Lifts Men's Basketball to 88-71 Win over Dutch

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Dec. 6, 2025) - Sophomore Jayden Brink scored a game-high 27 points, senior Jackson Jones added 21, and the Buena Vista men's basketball team used a stellar 51.5 percent shooting performance on Saturday to roll past visiting Central College 88-71 inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.

With cold temperatures and snow piling up outdoors, the heat was cranked up for the Beavers as they shot over 50 percent from the field in a game for the first time since Jan. 15, 2025 when it was 52.3 percent.

BVU was connecting from everywhere on the court in the first half, drilling 7-of-11 from downtown and shooting 54 percent from the field overall. The only place it didn't make a shot was the free-throw line where it didn't attempt a single shot over the first 20 minutes.

Brink nailed a three-point attempt on the team's first possession of the game which sparked a quick 7-0 lead out of the gate. The lead reached double digits for the first time at 19-9. Central was able hang around and got as close as five with four minutes to go, but the Beavers closed the half on a 10-1 run, including three-point makes from sophomore Jaden Jones and junior Kyle Sternberg,  and led 45-31 at the break.

BVU carried the momentum over into the start of the second half and quickly went up by 19 in the opening minutes. Jackson Jones made one of the team's three second half long range buckets as the lead reached the 20-point plateau at 59-37 with 14:32 remaining. The Beavers led by as many as 25 points near the eight-minute mark and never let the Dutch claw back any closer than 14 the rest of the way. The 88 points scored was the most the team has scored this season and marks its highest point total in A-R-C play since defeating Simpson 98-75 last season - a span of 13 games.

Brink was an efficient 9-of-15 from the field, including 4-of-7 from long range. It was his fourth 20-point performance over the last five games. Jackson Jones chalked up his second career 20-point game and was 9-of-14 overall and 3-of-5 from distance. Sternberg had arguably his best game of the year with 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Jaden Jones set a new career-high with his seven assists to go along with four rebounds and one steal. BVU, which leads the league in assist-to-turnover ratio, totaled 26 assists on its 34 made field goals and had only 13 turnovers. After not shooting a free-throw in the first half, the Beavers went 10-of-13 in the second half, including 5-of-6 from Brink.

BVU held the Dutch (4-4, 0-2 A-R-C) to 37 percent shooting and only 9-of-31 from downtown (29 percent). Owen Schipper scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds to help lead the way while Bryalon Thomsen made five three's and added 23 points.

Buena Vista improves to 5-2 on the year (1-1 A-R-C) and is at Simpson College (2-6, 0-1 A-R-C) next Saturday, Dec. 13, for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
