Volleyball Battles with Kohawks but Fall 3-0

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Oct. 31, 2025) - It was a Halloween showdown inside of Siebens Fieldhouse on Friday night for the Buena Vista volleyball team against visiting Coe College, but the Beavers would come up short, 3-0, despite a tough battle with the Kohawks (16-8, 4-1 A-R-C) by scores of 25-2, 25-19, 25-17.

The two teams went back-and-forth in the opening set as the score was tied three different times early on and not separated by more than three points until Coe broke open an 18-17 margin with four straight points to go up 21-17. Buena Vista battled its way back within 22-20 but the Kohawks scored three of the final four points to take the opening set.

Coe, which is currently second in the A-R-C standings, carried its momentum over into the start of the second set and jumped out to a 9-3 lead. BVU did settle in and clawed back within 13-11 only to have the Kohawks run off three straight to make it a five-point cushion. The Beavers got two of those points back but Coe, which had only a combined four attack errors in the first two sets, responded right back with three straight extend its lead to 19-13 and held off BVU in the end, 25-19.

The third set was all tied up at 11-11 midway through but a serving error for BVU sparked a run of three straight for Coe which put the Kohawks in front for good. BVU remained close at 16-13 but Coe closed the set on a 9-4 surge to hold off the Beavers.

Frehman Keylee Gregg led Buena Vista with nine kills and only three errors on 38 total swings and also turned in six digs. Fellow freshman Charley Hernandez was right behind with seven kills and added 11 digs. Sophomore Merced Ramirez dished out 24 assists and chipped in with nine digs.

As a team, the Beavers finished with a .152 attack percentage in the match while Coe posted a .298 clip. The Kohawks held a slight 39-31 edge in overall kills but BVU committed 14 errors compared to only eight by the visitors. Coe also had six total blocks with BVU recording three.

Maddie Harris led Coe with a match-high 15 kills as Maddy Maahs distributed the ball around to a balanced attack with 34 assists.

Buena Vista is now 7-15 overall (0-6 A-R-C) and will wrap up the home schedule by hosting Luther College (6-21, 0-6 A-R-C) Saturday, Nov. 1 at noon.
