Women's Track & Field with Strong Showing during Dennis Young Classic

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Jan. 25, 2025) - The Buena Vista University women's indoor track & field team was in action on Saturday by hosting the annual Dennis Young Indoor Classic and would finish the day with multiple individual titles, multiple personal best times and a new school record.

Freshman Claire Schroeder highlighted the day right out of the gate by setting a new school and meet record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.93 seconds. That clocking bettered the previous school record of 8.98 seconds by Madison Spear in 2017 and ranks 10th in NCAA DIII this season. The previous meet record was 9.07 set in 2020. Schroeder didn't stop there as she also placed second in the long jump with a personal best leap of 4.88m (16-00.25) and came in third in the 200m dash in 27.40.

Senior Courtney Johnson took home the title in the weight throw with a season-best heave of 14.26m (46-9.5) and claimed runner-up in the shot put at 12.44m (40-9.75). Payton Schermerhorn also turned in a big day in the field events for the Beavers by winning the shot put at 12.77m (41-10.75). That mark ranked 24th in NCAA DIII. Earlier in the morning, she took over third in the weight throw with a personal best toss of 12.85m (42-2.0).

Sophomore Megan Bakke put together a solid race in the 800m run and placed third overall with a personal best time of 2:23.71.

Freshman Ava Mills registered another personal best for the team by clearing a height of 1.50m in the high jump while placing third.

It was also a day of recognition for the Beavers as the team recognized its seniors prior to the start of the running events, and then a bit later on, the program honored a large group of individuals who purchased a hurdle in honor of a current or former member of the BVU track & field team.

Olympic Bronze Medalist and 5x World Medalist, Bershawn “Batman” Johnson was also in attendance as a special guest.

Buena Vista continues its schedule on Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at the Wartburg College Indoor Select in Waverly, Iowa.
