Beavers Close out A-R-C Championships

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (Apr. 30, 2024) - The Buena Vista University men's golf team wrapped up the American Rivers Conference Championships on Tuesday afternoon and moved back up one spot to take seventh overall with a final round 309.

Sophomore Matthew Turpen bounced back from one of his worst scores of the spring during Monday's second round to post a (+1) 72 on Tuesday. He got off to a blistering start with four birdies on the front nine and was 3-under on his round through eight holes. A bogey on the ninth slowed down that momentum just a bit, as he had just one birdie over the final nine holes. He ended the championships with a tough double-bogey six on the par-4 18th hole and took 23rd place overall.

Fellow sophomore Kaleb Sander finished his championships on a strong note as well by carding his lowest round of the 54-hole event with a 76. He shot a three-over 39 on the back nine and carded six pars during that stretch. He bumped himself up a couple spots on the leaderboard and tied for 31st.

Freshman Cooper Sebastian birdied two of his first three holes and was 2-under early in his final round but was hindered by the next two holes where he went a combined 5-over par. He did settle back in and was only three-over on the final 13 holes and turned in his best round of the championships at 77.

Sophomore Mason Laven birdied his opening hole but was plagued by a nine on the par-4 third and finished his championships with a final round 89. Freshman Justin Hanks rounded out the team's line-up with an 84 which gave him his best round of the championships. He would place 44th.

As a team, the Beavers carded nine birdies on the day and had its lowest round of the 54 holes to climb back in front of Coe College and hold off the Kohawks by one stroke for seventh. The 309 was BVU's lowest 18-hole championship round since a 311 back in the third round in 2015.

Luther College fired a final round 294 claimed the team title by nine strokes over runner-up Nebraska Wesleyan. The Norse's Jay Fjelstul was the overall individual medalist after firing a final round 1-under par 70 to win by three shots at +6.

The championships conclude the 2023-24 season for the Beavers.
