Men's Tennis Rolls to 7-2 A-R-C Win over Dubuque

WATERLOO, Iowa (Apr. 26, 2024) - The Buena Vista University men's tennis team kept its conference tournament hopes alive on Friday evening with a big 7-2 victory over the University of Dubuque in a match moved inside to the Black Hawk Tennis Club due to weather.

BVU started fast by rolling through doubles play with 8-2 victories at both No. 1 and No. 3 while taking the No. 2 match, 8-3. It was the first A-R-C win of the year for the No. 1 tandem of Dalton Pregon and Kaiden DePascale while the No. 2 team of Brock Bruns and Ryan Webb as well as No. 3 partners Tyler Hager and Henry Borts each pick up their second.

Highlighting the singles play for BVU was Webb at No. 4 as he ran his record to 3-3 in league play from that slot with a 6-1, 6-1 straight sets victory. Pregon improved to 2-4 at No. 2 with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph. Daniel Vargas notched his first conference win of the year with a strong 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 6. Brock Bruns fought back after a tough second set loss, to win the third set tiebreaker and win his match, 6-3, 3-6, 10-6.

“Today was another great step for the team of trying to fight hard for our goal of making the conference tournament,” said BVU head coach Brett Groen. “ We've been working hard on doubles and it paid off as we started the match up 3-0. We were able to continue the momentum into singles with Dalton, Ryan and Brock taking three of the four wins from the top four spots. Now we turn our sights towards Saturday's match-up and a chance to make the A-R-C Tournament.”

Buena Vista improves to 5-13 overall (2-5 A-R-C) and will play Loras College (7-13, 2-5 A-R-C) on Saturday, Apr. 27, with the winner earning the sixth and final spot into the A-R-C AQ Tournament. The match will also be played indoors at Black Hawk Tennis Club starting at 10:45 a.m.
