Men's Tennis Drops Opening Match to Johnson & Wales

HILTON HEAD, S.C. (Mar. 5, 2024) - The Buena Vista men's tennis team began its spring trip on Monday afternoon with a 7-2 loss against Johnson & Wales at the Hilton Head Resort.

BVU was able to keep things close early on as the No. 3 doubles tandem of Tyler Harger and Bryson Frederickson squeaked out a thrilling 8-7 victory which included a 7-5 tiebreaker. Harger later played a hard fought No. 5 singles match but came up short in a three-set tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-2, 2-10.

Daniel Vargas gave the Beavers their second victory by taking his No. 6 singles match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

“We came out a little flat in doubles, and just couldn’t get the tight points and games when we needed at 1 and 2,” said BVU head coach Brett Groen. “Tyler and Bryson really played the close points well and got us a good win to keep it close early.  We had some chances in singles, but it was a case of the little engine that could when we got near the finish line for a set, and couldn’t finish, then the let down showed up in the second set.  Tyler (Harger) and Daniel (Vargas) played well at 5 and 6 for us”

Buena Vista (0-6) continues the trip on Tuesday with a match against Penn State Harrisburg.
