Men's Soccer Wins 5-0 over Oak Hills Christian

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Oct. 18, 2024) - The Buena Vista University men's soccer team returned home on Friday to host a shorthanded Oak Hills Christian College team and the Beavers scored a pair of early goals and never looked back en route to a 5-0 non-conference victory.

The Wolfpack had only nine available players to begin the match and midway through the first half, they went down one more after an injury forced a player to sit out the remainder of the match.

Gabriel Mireles took a nice lead pass from left to right from Colton Waterhouse and knocked home his first career goal off from about 25 yards out early in the third minute. Waterhouse was the the recipient of a pass from Britain Miller that he punched through one minute later to double the score at 2-0.

Waterhouse added to his scoring late in the opening half when he intercepted a pass from the Wolfpack around the 25-yard line and dribbled once before blasting a shot to the bottom right of the goal to make it 3-0. The Wolfpack held their breath after that shot with their keeper in obvious pain after hitting the ground on his dive attempt, but after being attended to by the athletic training staff, he was able to remain in.

BVU, which tallied 26 shots in each half, capped off its scoring in the later half of the second period with first career goals from Tyler Pennington and Tyler Bailiff. Pennington was the Beavers' starting keeper while Bailiff was added to the roster for this match after serving as the team's student coach all season.

Alberto de la Cruz dished out the assist to Pennington while George Moreno was credited for the assist on Bailiff's goal on a corner kick.

Waterhouse led the way for the Beavers with 10 total shots, including five on-goal. Cole Babe was next with eight shots while Tyler Crall and Daniel Martinez each turned in six.

Isaiah Thomas relieved Pennington at the half and played the entire second half in-goal. The BVU defense held the Wolfpack without a shot attempt in the contest.

Buena Vista improves to 9-7 overall this season and will host Grinnell College in a non-conference match on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
