STORM LAKE, Iowa (Nov. 16, 2023) - The Buena Vista men's wrestling team hosted Loras College on Thursday night for both its home and American Rivers Conference openers, but the Duhakws would go on to hand the Beavers a tough 43-3 setback inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.
Loras picked up bonus points in all nine of its victories to help pull away. Trailing 13-0, graduate student Axel Hernandez put the home crowd into cheers by pulling out a thrilling 4-3 decision at 149 pounds over #14 Eric Kincaid. He jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a first period takedown before Kincaid made it 3-2 with a reversal. With the match tied 3-3 in the third period, Hernandez broke loose for an escape and then held off a late scramble. The victory moves his season record to 6-0 and he avenges his loss to Kincaid during last season's NCA Regional Tournament.
A pair of pins sandwiched around a technical fall over the final five matches gave the Duhawks (1-0, 1-0 A-R-C) a victory in their season opening dual.
