STORM LAKE, Iowa (Nov. 9, 2022) - The Buena Vista wrestling team opened its 2022-23 dual meet schedule on Wednesday night at home against Northwestern College (IA), but despite winning three straight matches midway through and getting a second period fall to end the night, the team came up just short in a 28-17 loss to the Red Raiders.
The match began at 184 pounds, and Northwestern jumped up to an 18-0 lead with three straight first period pins. BVU got on the board at 125 pounds after graduate student
Brandon Foster notched a commanding 19-7 decision. That victory jump-started a string of wins for the Beavers, as
Nolan Nguyen followed with a wild 11-10 win at 133 pounds and
Axel Hernandez added a 15-3 major decision at 141 to get BVU back within 18-11.
Northwestern, now 1-0 on the year, pulled out back-to-back decisions to extend the advantage to 24-11 before adding an 11-1 major decision at 165 pounds. BVU senior
Garret Bruce capped the dual by recording an early second period fall en route to his first victory of the season.
Buena Vista (0-1) was scheduled to host Saint John's University this Saturday, Nov. 12, but that dual has been postponed to Saturday, December 10. The start time for that dual is yet to be determined.
