LINCON, Neb. (December 14, 2019) - It was a solid finish for the Buena Vista wrestling team heading into the holiday break as the Beavers went 2-1 on Saturday during the Prairie Wolf Duals, hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan.
BVU faced Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) in the opening round and was strong from the opening match, building a 32-0 lead en route to its first dual victory of the year, 35-12. The Beavers won seven of the 10 matches, including the first six, to take control. After a forfeit at 125 put the team in front 6-0, it went on to record bonus points in each of the next three to go in front 23-0. MSOE won consecutive matches at 174 and 184, respectively, to get on the board and would close with a fall at 285.
In round two, BVU squared-off with Fontbonne University and carried the momentum over, winning eight of 10 matches en route to a commanding 45-9 triumph.Â
Byron Fleming won by technical fall at 125 pounds to get things started before
Axel Hernandez won by injury default at 133. Fontbonne won the first of its two matches by taking the 141-pound contest by fall. It was all Beavers from there, winning the next six matches, including four pins.
The final match-up of the day was against Concordia-Moorhead, and the Beavers came up just short against the Cobbers, 30-9. Concordia took the first eight matches and built a 30-0 lead, but four of those contests were decided by two points or less.Â
Don Phillips II and
Nick Mitchell each won back-to-back matches to close the dual, including a fall by Phillips and a 5-3 sudden victory by Mitchell at 285.
The Beavers enter the break at 2-3 overall and will be off until January 10, when it will host St. John's (Minn.) in a rescheduled dual that will begin at 4 p.m.
