Box Score The Buena Vista volleyball team looked to remain perfect in American Rivers Conference play on Tuesday night at Central College while also keeping its league-best win streak in tact, but the Dutch held off the Beavers in a hard-fought conference match played in Pella.
BVU trailed most of the first set before rallying late to face set point at 24-23. The Dutch, however, rallied with three straight kills to end the set at 26-24. The second set was back-and-forth from the opening serve with Central holding just a 19-18 lead late. From there, though, the Dutch recorded three consecutive kills to take a 22-18 lead en route to a 25-22 victory.
The Beavers weren't about to go down without a fight and proved that in the third set by jumping out to a quick 8-2 lead. The Dutch, however, stormed right back to tie the match at 9-9 before eventually building a 17-14 cushion. BVU still hung around and closed the set on an 11-4 run to win 25-21. The Beavers took that momentum into the start of the fouth set and led 10-8 before Central took over with a decisve 6-1 spurt that put the Dutch in front for good.
Senior Kylie Roe helped lead the way for the Beavers by finishing with a match-high 15 kills and 13 digs. She was just two kills shy of her career-high set against Grinnell earlier this season. Freshman Sydney McLaren was close behind with 13 kills and just three errors to go along with 15 digs. Serena Sandvig came up big with 10 kills which was her highest total since the first weekend of the season.
Summer Goss was all over the court, defensively, chalking up a match-high 32 digs while Mackenzie Gropel did her part with another double-double of 40 assists and 17 digs.
Landry Luhring led Central (6-7, 1-1 A-R-C) with 13 kills as the Dutch evened its conference mark after being swept against Simpson last week.
Buena Vista (8-4, 1-1 A-R-C) had won five straight regular season conference matches dating back to last season and had won seven straight matches overall this season. The team has not dropped consecutive matches since the first two outings of the season, and it will look to avoid doing so when it hosts Simpson College (5-10, 1-1 A-R-C) next Tuesday night, September 25, at 7:00pm.
