Box Score Luther College knocked off Buena Vista 3-1 back inside Siebens Fieldhouse back in 2016, and since that loss, the Beavers had rolled off 13 straight home victories until the Norse came back to Storm Lake on Saturday afternoon and rallied to win the final three sets to again edge BVU in four sets.
The Beavers and Norse came in tied with Dubuque for second in the American Rivers Conference standings. BVU came out strong to start the match, posting 11 kills and only three errors in the opening set. The team pulled away late, breaking open a one-point match to win 25-19.
Luther came back to even things up by taking control in the second set, holding the Beavers to just seven kills, en route to a 25-11 win. The third and fourth sets were back-and-forth the entire way, and the Norse were able to overcome just nine kills in the fourth to edge BVU 25-23 to cap the win.
Kylie Roe finished with a team-high 13 kills with Sydney McLaren right behind with 11. Serena Sandvig chipped in with nine kills while Brooke Runneberg added eight kills and no errors.
The Beavers, however, were held to only a .095 hitting percentage as a team while Luther posted a .225 clip.
McLaren and Roe each chalked up another double-double with 16 and 11 digs, respectively, as Mackenzie Gropel notched another with 37 assists and 12 digs. Summer Goss registered a team-leading 18 digs to go along with four assists and a pair of service aces.
Sandvig, along with Emily Ivey, chalked up three block assists apiece, as Runneberg added two. Both teams were tough at the net, defensively, turning in a combined 22 total blocks.
"This was clearly a tough loss," said head coach Aubrey Havlichek. "We came out well in set one but let some mental lapses take us out in set two, and it was just a huge upward battle we didn't win the rest of the way. Our fire came a bit too late in set four and we unfortunately came up just short of forcing the fifth. Brooke had another stellar night and continues to be unstoppable at the net. Serena made a huge push at the end of the fourth that kept us hanging on.
"I think we were lights out in serve receive and has some great defensive plays, but let a few too many hitting errors take us off our game. I'm confident we can bounce back for Wartburg on Tuesday and still have alot of competitive play ahead of us. The mighty eight defenitely won't let up. Big thanks to the huge crowd, your endless support is much appreciated by us."
Karissa Kim had a match-high 15 kills to help lead the Norse.
Buena Vista is now 13-10 overall (4-3 A-R-C) and will now close out the regular season on Tuesday night, October 23, with a home match against league-leading Wartburg College starting at 7:00 p.m.
