Box Score Jamie Navinskey had a career night with 15 kills and 17 digs while Jade Schaap followed with 14 kills and 15 digs, as the Buena Vista volleyball team came all the way back from two sets down to win a 3-2 thriller at Coe College (11-14, 3-4 IIAC) on Tuesday night to wrap up Iowa Conference play.
Navinskey reached double-digit kills for the fourth time this season and posted her second double-double during IIAC play. Schaap, meanwhile had a historic night of her own, as she became the program's all-time kills leader with her third of the night. She posted her second straight double-double and 13th on the year and now has 1,829 career kills. She also surpassed 400 kills on the year and wraps up league play ranked second in kills/set (4.19).
Ali Grein had the final kill of the match and finished with 13 overall on just four errors while tallying seven digs.
Mackenzie Gropel dished out a career-high 51 assists and had five digs while Summer Goss led the way with 20 digs and three ace serves.
The Kohawks edged BVU 25-22 and 25-21 to take a 2-0 lead in the match as BVU combined for 11 attack errors in those two sets. The Beavers had just 10 attack errors total the rest of the way, including just one in the decisive fifth set.
BVU came back with strong 25-23 and 25-17 wins over the third and fourth sets before rallying to win the fifth. BVU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the final frame only to see the Kohawks take a 6-3 lead thanks to four ace serves. Coe continued to lead 8-6 as the teams switched sides, but three hitting errors by the Kohawks helped the Beavers regain an 11-8 lead before Goss's final ace and Grein's final kill put the finishing touches on the team's seventh straight win and its first road win of the year (1-3).
Buena Vista improves to 17-9 overall and wraps up IIAC play at 5-3. The win assures the team of at least a top-4 finish in the league standings with one week to play in the regular season. The team is currently a half-game behind Dubuque (5-2) for second, as the Spartans will conclude its league schedule against league-leading Wartburg (5-0). Luther (3-2) is right behind BVU and still has three matches to play (Simpson, Central and Loras).
The Beavers will now wrap up its regular season home schedule tomorrow night against Martin Luther College (13-14) at 7:00 p.m. It will also be Senior Night for BVU with the seniors being honored prior to the match. BVU is 6-0 on inside of Siebens Fieldhouse this season.
