Box Score 2 The Buena Vista volleyball team rolled to a pair of non-conference victories on Saturday afternoon during the Bethany Lutheran Triangular, and the Beavers have now won six straight overall following their wins over Northland and Bethany Lutheran, respectively.
Junior Serena Sandvig and senior Jade Schaap were just too much for both teams to take on at the net, offensively, as the two combined for 56 kills. Schaap had a match-high 12 in the opener versus Northland before capping off the day with a match-high 19 agains the host Vikings. She now sits just two kills away for matching Maddie Bardole for the program's all-time career lead in kills (1,817).
In the opener against Northland, Schaap had her 12 kills on just 27 total swings, while making only two errors (.370). She narrowly missed a double-double with nine digs to go along with four blocks assists. Sandvig, meanwhile, had 10 kills and one error on 14 attempts. Summer Goss had 16 digs and five assists, as Mackenzie Gropel dished out a match-high 28 assists.
The Beavers came out with a big 25-6 win in the opening set, holding Northland to only two kills and forcing six errors. BVU came out and broke open things with a 16-2 lead. BVU then won the second 25-14 before rolling to a 25-10 win in the third.
Against the Vikings, BVU took control early as well with a 25-14 triumph in the first. The Beavers had 13 kills and just two errors to help them jump out to the big lead. BVU led 7-2 early on, and after Bethany Lutheran fought back to make it 8-7, the Beavers then made it 18-12 and hung on from there.
Things tightened up a little bit in the second, but BVU was able to hang on for a 25-21 win before completing the sweep with a 25-17 win in the third.
Schaap and her 19 kills again led the way as she completed the double-double with 11 digs. Fellow senior Ali Grein chipped in with 11 kills and had five digs with Sandvig third at five kills. Gropel had 37 assists and Goss 16 digs, as the Beavers appear to be hitting stride heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.
BVU moves to 16-9 overall and will close out the Iowa Conference season schedule on Tuesday night, October 17, at Coe College (11-13, 3-3 IIAC) starting at 7:30pm.
