Quick Start Sends Beavers to Shutout of Iowa Wesleyan

Box Score

It took only 11 seconds for the Buena Vista men's soccer team to score its first goal of the night, and not even a brief power outage could stop the Beavers on Wednesday night as they blanked visiting Iowa Wesleyan, 5-0.

Gum Riak took the feed off the opening whistle and blew past the defense and found the back of the net for his first goal of the year.  He then added to that total midway through the half when he put BVU in front 2-0 late in the 29'.

Just before the end of the first half, Jacob Heath converted a penalty kick passed a diving Tigers keeper, giving the Beavers a 3-0 advantage at the break.

Eric Powers pushed the cushion to 4-0 midway through the second half when he took a deflection and knocked it through before Julio Aguilar took a nice feed from Alan Maldonado and made it a 5-0 game with under a minute to play.

The Beavers were on the offensive attack from the opening whistle, holding a commanding 32-4 edge in total shots.  Powers took a match-high seven shots, while Heath was next next at five.

Nearly half of the team's shots were on-goal, including three from Heath.

Junior Matt Tennyson got the start in-goal and picked up his first shutout of the year, facing just two contested shots and posting two saves.

The Beavers improve to 5-7 overall and surpass last season's win total in the process.  Up next will be a pivotal Iowa Conference road match on Saturday evening at Coe College (3-8, 0-1 IIAC) starting at 5:00pm.
