Box Score Buena Vista freshman Naomi Wood scored a career-high three goals on Tuesday night, helping to lift the Beavers to a 5-2 home victory over visiting Dordt College on a cloudy, wet and cool night under the lights inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.
Wood wasted little time putting BVU in front, finding the back of the net on a nice feed from Sam Richards nearly eight minutes into the match. Midway through the 15th minute, sophomore Tori Carson made it 2-0 when she converted off of a nice feed from Richards.
The score stood that way until Wood extended the margin to three 14 minutes into the second half before capping her stellar performance when she and Richards hooked up again during the 66th minute. Her three goals were ony shy of matching a single-game record for the Beavers, set twice before.
Carson made it 5-0 with her team-leading fifth goal of the year late in the 71st minute before the Defenders (0-6) avoided the shutout with a pair of goals during the 78th and 87th minutes, respectively.
Wood capitalized on all three shots she took in the contest, while Richards also took four shots. Carson, along with Kayleigh Mize were right behind with four apiece.
BVU out-shot Dordt, 10-2, in the opening half and 17-8 overall.
Defensively, Tricia Schwartz and Anna Houghton combined on the win for the Beavers, who improve to 2-1 at home this season and 2-4 overall.
Buena Vista will return to the field on Friday night when they play a non-conference road match at Webster University beginning at 8:00pm.
*Note: Wood was incorrectly given credit for the second goal in the earlier release. That goal should have been credited to Carson.
