“Coach Millea showed heart and some great pain tolerance in coming back for our alumni recognition,” said Ivey, who was part of a conference basketball championship in 2015. Millea served his alma mater as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at that time.
Some 21 members of the men’s basketball program watched as the Beavers and Coach Jeff Horner defeated Luther College, 65-63. Earlier, nearly 20 women’s basketball alumni cheered and reconnected as the Beavers and Coach Kylee (Heiland) Boettcher ’02 defeated the Norse, 73-61. Both BVU teams would go on to earn a berth in the American Rivers Conference Basketball Tournament. The men’s team finished fifth in the league while the women’s team finished third in the league, the highest finish for the women’s team since 2006.
Millea, who serves as Storm Lake Middle School Counselor, likely counseled himself while reflecting on what was likely his last appearance as a player in the alumni basketball scrimmage. He laughed and found the silver lining, of course.
“If I was going to get hurt, I did so playing with guys I love at a place that means so much,” he said. “I guess I was also smart enough to do it within four feet of a guy I recruited and coached at BVU, a friend who went on to become my surgeon!”
