The Beavers came out of the breaking on fire in the third quarter and finished the frame shooting 10-of-15 overall, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc. It used a 16-3 run over the first six-and-a-half minutes of the quarter to open up a 22-point cushion at 52-32 and led by as many as 26 late in the quarter.
Simpson, however, didn't back down and slowly kept chipping away at the deficit. Senior Madalynn Hilgendorf gave the Beavers their largest lead of the contest at 65-38 following her and-one less than 30 seconds into the fourth quarter. BVU was still ahead by 23 midway through the final stanza. The Storm scored 10 of the final 13 points of the game, but it was too-little-too-late.
The win by BVU snapped Simpson's 14-game win streak in the series and was the Beavers largest margin of victory over the Storm since an 87-61 triumph inside of Siebens Fieldhouse back on Feb. 23, 2016.
BVU finished the game shooting 43.9 percent from the field despite making only 5-of-21 from long range. It did alot of damage at the charity stripe where it went 18-of-19 with the only miss coming in the fourth quarter. Defensively, it held Simpson to under 36 percent shooting and only 4-of-13 from downtown. The 57 points were the third fewest that the Storm (11-10, 7-5 A-R-C) had scored all season.
Maddax DeVault led Simpson with 17 points, five rebounds and three steals.
Buena Vista has won nine of its last 11 games overall and improves to 13-8 (7-5 A-R-C). The Beavers host league-leading Wartburg College (16-6, 12-1 A-R-C) on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 5:30 p.m.
