SEASON PREVIEW: Cross Country Teams Have Strong Mix of Youth & Experience in 2025

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Sept. 4, 2025) - The Buena Vista University cross country teams hit the course for the first time on Friday evening, and for first-year head coach Emily Hoesing, she will have a good mix of youth and experience on her rosters in 2025.

Hoesing joined the staff at BVU for the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons where she serves as an assistant coach. A 2021 graduate of BVU, she was a team MVP while competing for the Beavers and an All-Region finisher in 2019. She is excited to be back at her alma mater and has seen success both as a runner and early on in her coaching career where she helped coach a trio of all-conference runners at the University of Minnesota-Morris.

On the women's side, the Beavers will be led by junior Megan Baake and senior Karely Ruiz-Genovese. Baake was a top-30 finisher at the American Rivers Conference Championships as a sophomore last season and finished 66th at the NCAA Regional Championships in a field made up of over 200 total runners. Ruiz-Genovese was close behind Baake at the conference championships and took 86th at Regionals. Fellow juniors Takara Conley and Jaden Swarts have been regulars in the line-up for the Beavers over their first two years, and they both will provide the veteran depth and experience. Hoesing has also added multiple newcomers to the roster this season and is excited for that talented group to strengthen the team overall.

On the men's side, BVU will return a bulk of its line-up again this fall but will have to replace Kyle Miller, who became a staple of the cross country and track & field teams throughout his career, along with Kaden Sadler, who was also helped lead the way. Despite their departure to graduation, the Beavers still have depth and a great deal of experience back in its line-up that finished right in the middle of the pack among the 30-team field at the NCAA Regional Championships.

Among the group of veterans to help lead the way going into 2025 will include: seniors Dylan Austad, Carter Braun and Haydn Piskorski. Piskorski is the top returner form last year's American Rivers Conference Championship with junior Aiden Egertson not far behind. A talented group of incoming first-year members will add to the battle for competition and give the program a deeper overall roster.

Buena Vista begins the season at the Augustana College (SD) Twilight Meet on Friday, Sept. 5. The women's race is to begin at 8:30 p.m. with the men to follow at approximately 9 p.m.

Following the opening race, the Beavers are essentially in action every other weekend through the rest of the season with competitions at St. Olaf, Wartburg and Creighton. A BVU Homecoming 5k Race will be held near campus on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 8:30 a.m.  The American Rivers Conference Championships take place on Nov. 1 at Dubuque, Iowa, with Loras College serving as host. The NCAA Regional Championships follow on Nov. 15 at Waverly, Iowa, with Wartburg College as the host.
