SEASON PREVIEW: BVU Volleyball has Eyes Set on Strong 2025 Campaign

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Aug. 27, 2025) - The Buena Vista University volleyball team kicks off its 2025 season this weekend, and the Beavers have their eyes set on a fast start and a stronger overall campaign this fall.

BVU is coming off a 5-20 (0-8 A-R-C) season in 2024 but with a bit more experience heading into this year for fourth-year head coach Will Baumann, the Beavers are looking to make great strides going forward.

Five starters are set to return for the team as well as five of the team's top-7 overall attackers. The Beavers look to become more efficient on the attack after hitting .103 a year ago. Junior Kyla Vaughn turned in 111 kills in 2024 which was good for second on the team as fellow junior Sydney Meints was just shy of triple digits during her sophomore campaign with 99 kills. Juniors Reese Nieuwenhuis (84) and Hope Vanderlinden (83) are also coming off strong offensive seasons, and with the strong core of returners back in the line-up, BVU will hope to improve on its 9.20 kills per set average which ranked ninth against American Rivers Conference foes.

Defensively, however, the Beavers were among the toughest in the A-R-C last season. The team ranked second during league play in blocks per set (1.73) and were fifth in digs per set (17.27). Vaughn added to her force at the net on the defensive side with a team-leading 33 total blocks in all matches with Meints just behind at 30. Sophomore Merced Ramirez is the top returner in terms of digs, ranking 11th in the conference, after wracking up 3.06 per set during her rookie campaign and 272 overall. She also finished second on the team with 28 ace serves.

The Beavers will have to turn to a new full-time setter in 2025 after the departure of Jadyn Rausch, who averaged 6.91 assists per set (615 overall) and ranked fifth among the league leaders. Merced is the next closest among all returners but dished out only 35. Newcomer Faith Fitzgerald along with senior Olivia Gordon will both likely battle for the spot and add depth.

This year's roster will consist of only two seniors with a bulk of the returning line-ups listed as juniors. Baumann has also added a talented incoming first-year class of seven players and one transfer. He's excited about the mix of his roster and what type of team the fans will see on the court this season.

BVU is working hard to flip the script from the past two seasons. We're very pleased with the progress our players are making and with the talent of the incoming class. Our athletes have worked intensely to build the culture we believe will be successful.

BVU will kick-off its 2025 season at the Grinnell College/Central College Invitational on Friday, Aug. 29 and Saturday, Aug. 30 where it will play three matches over the course of the two days. It will then turn right around on Tuesday, Sept. 2, to host Faith Baptist Bible College at 6 p.m.

Following nine straight matches away from Siebens Fieldhouse, the Beavers will return home to begin American Rivers Conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 24 against Simpson College. BVU will also host conference matches against Wartburg College (Oct. 7), Coe College (Oct. 31) and Luther College (Nov. 1).

The Beavers have missed out on the A-R-C Tournament in each of the last two years after advancing into the tournament championship match in Baumann's first season in 2022.
