Volleyball Sweeps Faith Baptist in Home Opener

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Sept. 2, 2025) - The Buena Vista volleyball team hosted Faith Baptist Bible College in its home opener on Tuesday night and made quick work of the Eagles by cruising to a 3-0 victory by scores of 25-14, 25-16, 25-12.

It was a balanced attack for the Beavers throughout the match with five players totaling at least six kills. Leading the way was junior Sydney Meints with eight kills on only 17 total swings. Freshman Charley Hernandez and sophomore Ashlyne Havermann both added seven kills with Havermann also chipping in with a pair of blocks and 11 digs.

As a team, BVU had 38 kills and a .256 attack percentage overall. Hernandez led the way with 13 digs with junior Hope Vanderlinden and sophomore Merced Ramirez coming up big at the defensively, with two solo blocks apiece. Ramirez fed her attackers on the offensive side by dishing out 26 assists.

BVU rolled off the first four points of the match to set the tone early on and were never really threatened most of the night. The lead grew to 19-9 before the Beavers closed the door down the stretch. The Eagles held a slim 8-6 lead early in the second set before a kill from Havermann helped spark a key 9-3 surge for BVU that put them back in the lead for good at 15-11. The Beavers later scored six straight to put the set out of reach.

It was essentially all BVU in the final set after a 7-7 tie early on. The Beavers rolled off four straight points and eight of the next nine overall to build a 15-8 advantage. They finished things off with a 10-2 surge down the stretch.

Buena Vista is now 2-2 on the year and will return to the court on Sept. 5-6 to take part in the Suagar Loaf Classic hosted by St. Mary's University (Minn.).
