PELLA, Iowa (Aug. 31, 2025) - Freshman Charley Hernandez set a new career-high with 13 kills to lead the Buena Vista volleyball team against Calvin College on Saturday afternoon, but the Knights would sweep the Beavers in the first-ever match-up by the two teams to wrap up play at the Grinnell College / Central College Tournament.
Hernandez, who surpassed her previous mark set in Friday's season opening win against Knox, finished the match with a .258 attack percentage on 33 total swings. She also added four digs and a pair of assists. The rest of the team combined for only nine kills with freshman Ashlyne Havermann chiming in with five of those to go along with four digs. Sophomore Merced Ramirez dished out 19 assists and had one of the team's four ace serves.
Calvin (2-1) turned in 33 total kills but also made it tough on BVU with 13 ace serves. Aerin Baker led the Knights with 12 kills.
The two teams were deadlocked at 15-15 in the opening set before Calvin scored three straight and five of the next six to take control at 20-16 down the stretch while holding off BVU 25-22. The second set was 16-14 late before the Knights again used a late surge to pull away and win 25-18. It was all Calvin in the third as it completed the sweep with a 25-10 victory.
Buena Vista dips to 1-2 on the year and will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday, Sept. 2, when the team hosts Faith Baptist Bible College in the home opener at 6 p.m.
