Softball Falls Twice to Loras on Senior Day

STORM LAKE, Iowa (May 2, 2025) - For the final time this season, the Buena Vista softball team was in action as it hosted Loras College in an American Rivers Conference doubleheader. The Duhawks, however, spoiled Senior Day for the Beavers with an 11-2 (5 inn.) victory in game one before holding off BVU, 1-0, in the finale.

The Duhakws jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of game one, highlighted by a three-run triple to cap the scoring in the inning. BVU, however, stormed right back to get two of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning with RBI doubles from senior Madalyn Elwood and junior Riley Garner.

Loras, however, pulled away from there with four runs in the second and adding its final two in the fourth.

Senior Abigail Clark made her collegiate debut inside of the circle for the Beavers to start the game. She went just 0.2 innings and was responsible for all five first-inning runs on four hits. Kali Irlmeier came on in relief and pitched the remainder of the game.

Sophomore Jillian Garcia was 2-for-2 in the game to lead the Beavers with Elwood, Garner and senior Danica Workman all chipping in with one hit apiece.

Game two turned into a pitcher's duel from start to finish. Loras scored the game's only run with an RBI single in the top of the second inning.

BVU's biggest threat of the game came in the fourth inning when Elwood doubled to lead off the inning. Garcia walked two batters later to put runners at first and second with only one out. Elwood was later thrown out attempting to steal third base before the Duhawks got out of the jam with a groundout to shortstop. The only other hit for the Beavers came in the fifth on a single from freshman Bradi Krager.

Loras had nine hits overall in the game but stranded seven runners.

Garner got the start inside the circle for BVU and went the distance, allowing the one run on nine hits without striking out or walking a batter.

Buena Vista finishes its season at 7-27 overall (0-16 A-R-C) while the Duhawks improve to 22-14 (9-7 A-R-C).

Following the conclusion of the doubleheader, the Beavers recognized its group of five graduating seniors which included: Abigail Clark, Maddy Elwood, Paige Druskis, Danica Workman and Kayla Farmer.
