Madalynn Hilgendorf scored a career-high 17 points while freshman
Bradi Krager followed with 10 to help lead the Buena Vista women's basketball team on Wednesday night at Simpson College, but a big second and third quarters by the Storm lifted them past the Beavers, 80-55.
Hilgendorf was an efficient 7-of-10 shooting from the field which included 3-of-3 from downtown. Defensively, she hauled in six rebounds and chalked up three steals. Krager made a pair of 3-point baskets of her own and also dished out a team-leading four assists. Senior
McKenna Cone also drilled three from long range (3-of-6) and added nine points, junior
Danika Demers turned in eight points, five rebounds and matched Krager with four assists.
Buena Vista finished 10-of-28 from downtown in the game (35.7 percent) which accounted for half of its made field goals overall. Outside of the long range shooting, the Beavers were held to only 11-of-33 and only attempting four free-throws.
The Beavers were held to only 27 percent shooting in the opening quarter but were able to stay within striking distance by making 3-of-8 from downtown compared to just 1-of-8 by Simpson. The Storm made one more field goal overall and led 15-13 heading to the second. BVU was held to just 3-of-13 shooting in the second while the Storm heated up to 44.4 percent (8-of-18) and extended their lead to 36-24 at the half.
Krager scored the first points of the second half and minutes later made one of her attempts from beyond the arc to keep BVU within 41-31, but then the Beavers were held to only one free-throw over the next four minutes as Simpson opened up a 19-point cushion and led by as many as 23 in the quarter.
The Storm, which made 8-of-12 from downtown in the second half, took a 59-38 advantage into the fourth and opened the final frame on a 13-5 run to extend it to 72-43 and all but put the game out of reach with under seven minutes to go.
Molly Lutmer scored a game-high 20 points to pace Simpson (15-10, 11-5 A-R-C) while Haley Rassmusen added 18 points. The game was the final regular season contest for the Storm.
Buena Vista is now 8-16 overall (3-12 A-R-C) and wraps up its season on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Nebraska Wesleyan University with tip-off at 2 p.m. inside of Snyder Arena.
