Coe Pulls Away for 81-64 Win over Beavers to begin A-R-C Play

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Dec. 3, 2025) - The Buena Vista men's basketball team took on Coe College in the American Rivers Conference opener on Wednesday night, but it was the Kohawks using a 16-2 run midway through the second half to break open a two-point game and help knock off the Beavers, 81-64, inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.

Coe held a slim 41-38 lead at the break, and six minutes into the second half, sophomore Jayden Brink, the reigning A-R-C Male Athlete of the Week, buried a three-point basket that brought the Beavers back to within 56-54. BVU then turned the ball over on its next possession which led to a Kohawk bucket and a flagrant foul that helped spark the big run.

The Beavers were still within striking distance at 74-61 with 6:30 still to play but went just 1-of-9 from the field down the stretch and could not make enough of a run while seeing its four-game overall win streak come to an end.

The first half was back-and-forth from the opening tip with neither team leading by more than three points until the Beavers built their largest lead of the night at 30-26 with 4:13 left in the half. The Kohawks came right back with back-to-back layups on their next two trips down the floor to tie it at 30-30. Ned Hayes cut BVU's deficit down to 39-38 with a three-pointer late in the half before Coe managed to put in a bucket just before the first half buzzer sounded to take a three-point lead into the break.

BVU made 10-of-28 attempts from distance in the game (35.7 percent) and was 43.4 percent from the floor overall but the Kohawks were a touch better at 56.5 percent from the field and 8-of-15 from behind the arc (53.3 percent).
