Women's Tennis Drops Hard Fought 6-1 Match to Wartburg

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Oct. 1, 2025) - The Buena Vista women's tennis team returned home on Wednesday afternoon to host Wartburg College and battled tough against the Knights from the first serve, but came up a little short with a 6-1 loss.

Hannah Higgins and Macy Weller played a tough No. 1 doubles match to set the tone for what turned out to be a hard fought dual match against one of the top team's in the league. Higgins and Weller pushed Morgan Kathman and Tori Johnson to the limit but came up just short, 6-4.

Wartburg seized control of the other two doubles matches and picked up 6-0 victories to claim the early doubles point.

Higgins was again tough in her No. 1 singles outing against Kathman but was edged in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Junior Macy Weller continues her solid play and would secure the lone win for BVU on the day by taking her No. 2 singles match over Brooke Bloom in a three-set tiebreaker. After dropping the opening set, 7-5, she rallied in the second to force the tiebreaker with a 7-5 triumph of her own before going on to win in the tiebreak.

Senior Taylor Fritz tried to force a third-set tiebreaker at No. 3 but eventually fell, 6-1, 6-4. Charlie Rayford was able to take points in both sets of her No. 6 match despite falling, 6-1, 6-3.

“Top to bottom, that is the toughest we've played against Wartburg in a very long time,” said BVU head coach Dan Taylor. “Wartburg is always solid, and has been a top three or four team in the conference for many years. To have several competitive sets with them shows how much work our ladies have put in and that we are making positive strides. Macy played the best singles match of her career, not letting a close first set loss get her down, and closing out both a tight second set and a match tiebreaker for the win. She and Hannah were very even at number one doubles, and Hannah, also in singles, played tough against a very successful number one player for Wartburg.”

“Taylor picked up her game in the second set and lost a tight one 6-4, and Charlie made great adjustments to make her second set competitive at 6-3,” added Taylor. “There are many positives we can take away today, as well as additional things to work on, and we'll see what we can do against the top-two teams on Friday.”

Buena Vista is set to host both Coe College (4-2, 4-1 A-R-C) and Luther College (7-1, 6-0 A-R-C) on Friday to close out the regular season. The match with the Kohawks is scheduled for 9 a.m. out on Buntrock Tennis Courts, while the team plays the Norse at 4 p.m.
