CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Jan. 25, 2025) - The Buena Vista women's basketball team went back on the road Saturday afternoon and hung right with Coe College the entire game, but the Kohawks were aided by their long range shooting as they held off the Beavers, 76-64.
BVU finished the game shooting 45.8 percent from the field which was its second-highest total in a game this season. Despite the strong shooting day, the team was held to only 2-of-12 from downtown (16.7 percent) while the Kohawks made 8-of-29 attempts (27.6 percent). The Beavers also made it to the free-throw line and attempted more than twice as many as the Kohawks, but had to settle for only an 8-of-14 effort (57.1 percent).
Freshman
Bradi Krager capped off a strong week by leading the way for BVU with 19 points, six rebounds and three steals. She was 8-of-12 shooting and made one of the two treys from beyond the arc. Junior
Madalynn Hilgendorf followed with 13 points and freshman
Tyme Boettcher added 12. Boettcher was 6-of-9 shooting, hauled in a team-high seven rebounds and tacked on two steals. Junior
Jenna Hallock came off the bench and chimed in with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting and made 3-of-4 at the line. Junior
Danika Demers just missed out scoring in double digits with nine points, but also grabbed seven boards and dished out three assists.
A jumper by Hallock with 3:23 left in the opening quarter matched the largest lead of the frame for BVU at 15-12, but the Kohawks closed the quarter on a 12-5 run to lead 24-20. Coe scored the game's only points during the first four minutes of the second quarter to push its lead up to eight and later led by as many as 11 with under 2:00 left in the half. BVU was able to score the final five points of the half to make it a 37-33 game at the break.
Krager made a layup 10 seconds into the second half and later drilled one of her two from distance to pull the Beavers with three at 41-38 with only two minutes gone by. Coe then scored seven of the next 12 to push its cushion back to double digits at 53-43 and closed the periord with three points inside the final 15 seconds to go up 13 heading to the fourth.
BVU closed the game strong by making 8-of-15 shot attempts in the fourth quarter but the Kohawks seemed to have an answer each time and finished with seven field goals of its own. Krager got the Beavers as close as eight with 3:30 left in regulation and it remained an eight-point difference with 90 seconds on the clock. From there, the Kohawks made back-to-back layups to extend it out to 12 and put the game out of reach in the end.
Taylor Brunson turned in a game-high 35 points for Coe (14-4, 6-3 A-R-C) and made 17 of the team's 32 field goals in the game. She also hauled in 11 rebounds and added five steals.
Buena Vista is now 6-12 (1-8 A-R-C) and has a week off before returning to action on Saturday, Feb. 1, to host Luther College at 2 p.m.
