ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (Sept. 1, 2024) - The Buena Vista University men's golf team began its fall season on Sunday by posting an opening round 303 and in ninth place overall at the Highland Championship, hosted by Augustana College (IL).

Buena Vista had six of its seven golfers in the field shoot rounds under 80.

Matthew Turpen is tied for third overall after his opening round score of 2-under 70 which included five birdies. Kaleb Sander, Gabe Kramer and Justin Hanks all carded rounds of 5-over 77 and are tied for 42nd. Mason Laven and Payton Greenwookd are both closed behind after rounds of 79. Reid Hany rounded out the line-up with an 85.

A total of 21 teams and 110 golfers are competing in the event. North Central (IL) leads the team race by two shots after firing an opening round 291. The Beavers are two shots back of eighth and only three back of sixth.

The final round of the 36-hole event is set for Monday at Highland Springs Municipal Golf Course.
